Intro to Handgun Safety & Firearms Operations
This course is designed to provide four hours of training for people who are new gun owners or are thinking of purchasing a handgun for personal safety and/or home defense.
Training will begin with a safety briefing and an introduction to handguns and ammunition. All participants will spend 1.5 hours practicing marksmanship fundamentals and defensive tactics in the firearms simulator. All participants will also spend 1.5 hours on the live-fire range, where certified instructors will provide instruction on effective target shooting skills.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to
Recite the four rules of gun safety
Describe the different types of pistols, their parts, and operation
Identify types and calibers of ammunition
Be able to load and unload a firearm safely
Demonstrate effective firing stance, grip, and use of handgun sights
Demonstrate safe handgun handling skills
Describe the role of the Range Safety Officers
Participate in target shooting and defensive use-of-force exercises using an interactive police firearms simulator with laser gun technology
This course is open to people over the age of 16. Because of some adult content, teens ages 14 - 15 years, may attend with a parent or guardian who is also a participant.
Handguns, ammunition, and targets are provided. If you already own a handgun, you are encouraged to bring it with you, but please bring ammunition for it. We reserve the right to remove a firearm from use if we think it represents a safety risk for students, trainers, or facility personnel.
